TECHNIQUE & TOOLS

Goyeska is a hybrid movement language where the elegance of Escuela Bolera encounters the ritual intelligence of Afro-Cuban diasporic energies. It begins with a warm-up that progresses through pre-set exercises, tasks, guided improvisation, and an exploration of the Principal 6 method, a dance method developed by Henry Rodríguez to awaken a diversity of layers and textures in the body and make them available for dance and, ultimately, choreograph from a pre-loaded system. Through six principles, the method facilitates new perspectives for experiencing and understanding movement and training the friction between two intelligences: the upper and lower body coexisting through competitive initiations, the duality and contradiction between grounding and elevation. In Principal 6, dancers will prepare body and mind, as well as explore their own creativity, and recognize an available poetic body.

At the Amsterdam Dance Center, practice is structured in cycles of five classes each: three classes focus on technique, tools, and immersion in the style. The final two classes concentrate on choreographic material.
